Matt Carter drove in three runs with two hits, and Nick Mackedon was 2 for 4 as Trinity started a three-game series at South Region opponent Toccoa Falls College Friday afternoon. The Eagles totaled nine hits on the day, but Toccoa came from behind to win it 5-3.

With his team trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Carter laced a single into right that drove in Jordan Keys (reached on error) and Christian Draper (doubled) with the tying runs. Carter then put the Eagles ahead two innings later with his second hit and third run batted in. David Quevedo led off the sixth getting hit by a pitch and went first to third on Mackedon’s base hit before scoring on Carter’s single.

Toccoa came back, however, with two home runs in the bottom of the sixth. Landon Mclane led off the inning with a solo shot to tie the score at 3-3, and Justin Brooks homered one out later to put his team ahead. Toccoa added an insurance run on Luke Allen‘s squeeze bunt before the inning ended. Toccoa scored the game’s first two runs in the bottom of the third.

Trinity put the potential tying runs into scoring position in the ninth, but Austin Shea got the final two outs to finish off the complete-game victory.

Uriah Brewer started for Trinity and allowed two unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Carter finished with a final line of 2-4 with 3 RBI, and Mackedon picked up a double as one of his two hits. Jon Shiver was robbed of a home run to lead off the game when center fielder Brandon Tamayo leaped and reached over the fence to bring it back. Shiver, A.J. Alexio, and David Hall also hit safely for the Eagles.

The two teams will complete the series with a double-header that begins at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Trinity will then finish the regular season with a home-and-home series with NAIA Edward Waters College next Friday (single game at Trinity) and Saturday (double-header at Edward Waters), April 27 and 28.

The South Region tournament begins on May 8 at Trinity Ballyard.
