A comeback effort that featured two goals from freshman Joseph Nava tied the game at 2-2, but the Trinity Baptist College Eagles fell just a little short at Ave Maria University. The NAIA Ave Maria Gyrenes scored a second-half goal to win it 3-2.

With the Eagles down 2-0 just beyond the midway point of the first half, Nava connected for his first collegiate goal — and the first of his two on the afternoon. He then hit again less than two minutes into the second half to tie the score at 2-2. Nava took three shots overall, and the Eagles had 14 total — eight in the first half and six in the second.

Tcharlentz MiliusNaisier Guanipa, Clayton McDaniel, and Angelo Fernandez had two shots apiece while Nathan WilliamsGabriel Zaffiro, and Pedro Power-Melgar each took one.

Seven of those shots were on goal, but Ave Maria goalkeeper Andrea Solomone saved three of four in the first half, and replacement goalkeeper Justis Mejia saved two of three in the second.

Trinity goalkeeper Kyle Aultman was just as stingy, saving four of seven shots on goal. Ave Maria managed 13 shots overall, and the two teams played even soccer throughout the entire game. An own goal in Minute 58 gave the Gyrenes a 3-2 lead, and their defense never relinquished it.

Ave Maria’s Kaveon Dux took seven total shots and hit two of them for goals. Both scores came within 20 seconds of each other in Minute 25. Four other Gyrenes took aim at the net six times with four them on goal.

The Eagles will take the field again on Saturday, this time at NCCAA/NAIA Warner University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT. After nearly a week off, one more road game sees the Eagles at NCAA Division II Florida Southern University on August 30 before the gentlemen play their home opener.

The home portion of the schedule begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, when the Eagles host USCAA/NAIA Florida College. The next two games that follow are also home games verses Webber International University on September 8 and Point University on September 10.
