Natalia Lopez scored 23 points, and two other Eagles reached double digits as Trinity Baptist College Women’s Basketball battled Judson College in Mobile, Alabama, Saturday afternoon. Judson came away with the 80-58 win.
Lopez buried nine shots, two of them three-pointers, and connected on all three free throws for her team-high 23 points. She also pulled in six rebounds in helping her team keep the game close. Destiny Green scored 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting with two threes of her own, and Megan Gooden had a similar performance in putting a dozen points on the board.
Green led the entire court with 20 rebounds, 15 of them on the defensive side, to help set up many scoring opportunities. Shaina Hill grabbed nine rebounds an contributed eight points in the effort. Gooden rebounded seven total missed shots.
Avianna Phillips scored two points very early in the first quarter before departing with injury. The Eagles fought Judson with four players, who worked together on defense to force Judson to shoot from the outside. Even with the advantage, Judson scored only 18 points in the paint, but their top scorer, Libby Whitten, buried 11 of 18 three-point shots to garner most of her game-high 35 points.
Following Whitten were Madison Casale with 16 points and Bailey Davis with 12 to help lead Judson. Katie Glover (9), Tiffany Watson (6), and Taylor Hutto (2) all contributed points for Judson.
Head coach Judy Allen expressed her pleasure with the effort her short-handed team gave: “We had to play most of the game with four players,” she stated. “Avianna got hurt early in the first quarter, but I am truly proud of them all even with the loss.” The Eagles were also without their leading scorer, Shay Jackson, due to injury. It is uncertain if Jackson will return this season.
The Eagles will next play on January 19 when they travel to Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia, to play a South Region game with the Screaming Eagles. A trip to Bob Jones University on January 20 and Wesleyan College on January 23 will follow before the Eagles play their next home games on January 26 (Trinity College of Florida) and 27 (Piedmont International University).
