Kiley Sanders put the Eagles on the board early, but a late goal from Ave Maria University saw the Gyrenes come from behind to win 2-1 Saturday afternoon in South Florida.

Sanders connected six minutes into the game for her first goal of the season, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Trinity battled all afternoon, but the Gyrenes’ defense thwarted several Eagle attacks and limited Trinity to three shots. Kareema Mitchell took two of those three shots in a very cleanly-played game by both teams. There were no yellow cards assigned to either team.

Eagles goalkeeper Jennifer Jeffery played a very tight goal and saved 10 of 12 shots on goal — one of those saves coming on a penalty kick — but the NAIA Gyrenes scored twice to come from behind. Sarah McBride tied the game with a goal in Minute 19, and Bernadette Hartney connected on a loose-ball score with thirteen minutes remaining in the game. The duo combined for 11 total shots and six on goal.

Kareema Mitchell sets the offense.

The Eagles will face the same team at Trinity on Saturday, September 8, when the Gyrenes come to Jacksonville. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EDT. The Kentucky Christian Classic will follow on September 14 and 15 when the Lady Eagles travel to Grayson, Kentucky, to face Randall University and Johnson University of Tennessee, respectively. The next two games are then at home versus Florida College on September 18 and South Region opponent Toccoa Falls College on September 21.
